जी-मेल एउटा नि:शुल्क पी ओ पी 3 (POP3) र आई ऍम ए पी (IMAP) वेबमेल (webmail) सेवा गूगल द्वारा उपलब्ध गराईयेको हो [१][२] यूनाइटेड किंगडम र जर्मनीमा यसलाई आधिकारिक रुपमा गूगल मेल भन्छन। जीमेलको बीटा रिलीज (beta release)को 1 अप्रिल, 2004 मा मात्र आमन्त्रण द्वारा शुरू गरियो र 7 फरवरी, 2007 देखि आम जनताको लागि उपलब्ध भयो यद्यपि करोंडौँ उपयोगकर्ताहरु [३][४][५]

1 GB (GB) प्रति उपयोगकर्ताको प्रारंभिक भंडारण क्षमताको पेशकश संगै जीमेलले त्यस बेला एउटा महत्वपूर्ण वृद्धि गर्यो जुन त्यसको प्रतियोगीहरुलाई 2 देखि 4MB सम्म सित्तैमा वेबमेल भंडारण भन्दा धेरै थियो अचेल यो सेवा 7250 एम बी (मेगाबाइट) (MB) भन्दा धेरै सित्तै भंडारण गर्छ र 10 जीबी देखि 400 जीबीको अतिरिक्त भंडारण $ 20 देखि $ 500 (US) प्रति वर्षको लागि उपलब्ध छ। [६][७][८] [८] जीमेलमा खोज (search)उन्मुख अंतराफलक र इंटरनेट फोरम (Internet forum) को समान एक "वार्तालाप दृश्य" हैसफ्टवेयर व्यक्तकारी जीमेल को एजेक्स प्रोग्रामिंग (Ajax programming) प्रविधीको कारण जानिन्छ।
