'A Close View of Madhypur Thimi'
Madhypur Thimi, the fourth largest town of the valley is situated in the center of the valley between Patan, Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Because of its position it serves as a bulwark between Bhaktapur,Patan and Kathmandu during the late Malla period when there were often battles among the three kingdoms of the valley. Several legends surrounded the name "THIMI" and its meaning. Legend says that because the people of Thimi so successfully defended Bhaktapur, the kings of Bhaktapur called them "CHHEMI" meaning "Capable people"- thus praising them for their loyal constant support. Gradually the name of the settlement became Thimi. The official name of the village in those days was Madhyapur or Madhyapuri and common Newari names Thimi. Another version says- The Newari "THI" means bright and burnings, while "MI" means fire. The people of this city were also burning like a fire in their city. So nobody could ever set fingers upon these people of Thimi. The historic city, Madhyapur Thimi is divided in 17 wards which spread across11.47 sqkm.is situated 8 Km. East of the Kathmandu Sundhara and 4.8 Km. West of Bhaktapur. Archaeological findings have proved that mankind engrossed this city even when the Lichhavi dynasty reined the valley. The total population of the city, located 1326 Meters above sea level is 47,751(Male 24747 and Female 23004) according to the last census report 2001 but now it is estimated 62000 population. Madhyapur Thimi was declared a municipality in 1997 March 27 (2053–12–14 B.S.) by combining 5 Village Development Committee namely Bode, Nagadesh, Chapacho, Balkumari and Divyashwori. Majority of the people here comprise different levels of the typical Newar community followed by Chhetri, Brahmin, Rai, Magar, Damai, Sarki and so on. However, the locals comprise of a homogenous community involved in different vocations, mainly farmers and traditional woodcarver. The existing small industries basically include business of agriculture products such as rice, beaten rice, pulse and other vegetables. The local beaten rice known as Tikani Beaten rice due to its origin from a place called Tikani in Madhyapur Thimi, is very famous for its rich taste. Clothes are manufactured on handlooms, ceramic cups; plates along other decoration pieces are also prepared in the city. SAARC Tuberculosis Hospital, Korea Nepal friendship hospital, other different type of private hospitals and the central offices of various educational governing bodies as well as other vocational training institutes are also situated here. This city is well equipped with transport facilities mainly by buses, mini buses, micro buses, taxis and so on Arniko highway and old Thimi Bhaktapur road. The Neel Barahi jungle is recently developed into a popular picnic spot and view point spot. As you enter the city, the locals can be seen busy in their various professions. The Bajracharyas and Shakyas are busy in making gold and silver ornaments. The potters, mainly the Prajapaties, are manufacturing various kitchen utensils from clay popularly known as gagries, tawa, karuwa, and so on for which the city is known. The Chitrakars are also equally skilled in making artistic paper masks of various deities, besides the rest are farmers cultivating cash crops and other vegetable. This city is known as green vegetables garden. Madhyapur Thimi, is like other typical Newar communities also marked by various festivals, Jatras and dances. Bisket, Sithi Nakha, Gatha Muga Charhe, Saparu, Mohani Nakha (Dashain), Swonti Nakha (Tihar), Chathah, Shila Charhe, Fagu Purnima are some of the major festivals. Among jatras BISKET JATRA also known as SINDOOR JATRA is the most popular one. Here thousands of people gather during the time of Nepali New year, which is based on the lunar calendar. The Tongue Penetrating jatra is held in Madhyapur is one of attractive one. Another jatra called Gai jatra is held to remind people who died in the previous year. In this occasion the families more a shrine and present it during a procession. Among the popular dances are Neel Barahi Dance of Bode, Mahakali dance and Pulu kishi dance of Nagadesh, Bhairab dance of Chapacho. The horse dance of Pobu and the Raj kumar dance of Maru as known as Indra-Apsara. Apart from these, the rice plantation dance and the Lakhe dance of the kapalies are also famous. Madhyapur Thimi Municipality is under way to develop into tourism spot. Its various rich and traditional cultural heritage, beautiful sites and monasteries are helping the Municipality. The traditional vocations in which the locals presently involve can also attract tourists. Madhyapur Thimi is well known name for its own and diverse art, culture, festivals, dance, traditional music and life style. Many of the existing temples and places of religious importance dates from prehistoric times are situated here. The chariot festival (Bisket Jatra), the Tongue Penetrating Festival and the living music and dances are the real identity of Madhyapur and it has made Madhyapur a living museum. Most of the temples, shrines and monuments are set within the old settlement areas of Bode, Nagadesh, Chapacho and Balkumari area. There are also a considerable number of places of religious importance located in other parts of the Municipality.
