MAHARJAN

From unknown resource (Please let me know if someone has source for this)

The word called 'MAHARJAN' (surname given by Jay Sthiti Malla - Malla kings are from northern India to Nepal, run away from Muslim invasion) was come from two main words ( MAHA+ RAJAN) divided into TWO terms: First one is MAHA means 'great, majority' and the second is RAJAN which means 'Prince', so-called the 'great prince' or commonly known as the King of kings i.e. prince sidhartha or Buddha who was born in 6 Century BC in Lumbini, Southern Nepal.

It also can be said that 'MAHA' means 'Honey' in Nepali language, 'ARJAN' which means 'Earning or Income'. They are so 'lovely' people like bees make honey as well as they are diligent people and has a good manner, strong, patriot, loyalty, at the same time they have their own personality, moreover so forth...simple and gentle ....

'MAHARJAN' is one of the standard largely known tribal people of Nepal(the origin lineage Buddhist ancestors). Especially their location is in Kathmandu Valley for many centuries. They were settled down in the valley since 6 century BC when the King Ajatasatru invaded to the kingdom of Kapilavastu in the Buddha's time and all of Buddha's relatives fled away from there to north which is now we call Kathmandu city. So they became indigenous people of Kathmandu - capital city of Nepal and outskirt the Valley. They are originally fulfiled royal family and also called them Newa: or Newar at the moment, their Language is Newari known as Nepal Bhasa (Nepal language).

Maharjan- Newa:(Newar), the indigenous people of Kathmandu mostly live on the valley floor. Inhabited in majority by the Newars the major towns, Kathmandu (Kantipur, Kasthamandap, Yen or Nepa:), Patan (Lalitpur, Yale), Bhaktapur(Khwopa) and smaller towns, Kirtipur (Kipu), Thimi, Sankhu, Banepa (Bhot), Dhulikhel and the settlements Bungamati, Khokhana (Khona), Balambu (Balbu or Bhastipur), Tolkha still do portray rich Newari culture and display mesmerizing art & architecture giving a feel of ancient magic. The Newars speak a Tibeto-burman dialect, unique in itself. Among them there are mostly followers of Buddhism and some Hinduism and their culture blend together enabling them to live in harmony. Newari lifestlye is marked by religious festivals throughout the year providing opportunities to socialize and entertain traditionally.
